With my watercolours I aim to create open-ended poetic narratives that reflect on our complicated relationships to each other and the natural world. The Weight of it All continues the themes of repair and symbolic metamorphosis that have run through my recent work. The painting is a response to the latest revelations about the dramatic loss of migratory bird species across North America where in recent years over three billion birds have disappeared. Across the United States this past year migratory birds died by the tens of thousands. Birds were literally falling out of the sky. The cause of this mass-die off was found to be long-term starvation directly linked to our climate catastrophe. With sombre determination the women in this painting go about the impossible task of magicking these starved avian bodies back to life. It is an act that is both disturbing and reassuring and it is my way of grappling with the cognitive dissonance we find ourselves afflicted with in this age of climate crisis and global ecological breakdown.
