« Throughout this year of pandemic restrictions, a walk around the block took precedence as one of our last state-sanctioned uses of public space. As De Certeau famously writes, “the act of walking is to the urban system what the speech act is to language.” Considering non-destinations, commuter spaces, and impromptu installations, my recent work explores how meaning is given to public spaces both in an ‘official’ and ‘everyday’ context, reflecting the life of the city itself as it was arrested and slowed over the last year.

As access to public space and human interaction is restricted, city dwellers maintain a form of connectivity that transcends language; footsteps tracking a shortcut through the snow, a prayer card in the window, a carefully maintained public garden. These exist as reminders that even as we live under government regulated isolation, in the city we are never really alone.”

// Eva Morrison is a writer, curator, and artist based in Montreal. She received a BFA from Concordia University in 2019, specializing in Art History and Studio Arts. Notably she has worked as lead contributor to the Feminist Art History publication Yiara Online, interned at OPTICA artist-run-centre, written for the FOFA Gallery Exhibition Catalogue, and presented her research as a panelist at the 8th Annual CUJAH Conference. Her artistic practice is focused on painting and her work has been exhibited at Somewhere Gallery, the FOFA Gallery, VAV Gallery, Mainline Gallery, Gallery X, and others.

Her artistic practice is rooted in her everyday domestic and urban landscape; it begins with the observation of transitory spaces, domestic rituals, and the still life of the here and now. In the act of photographing and reproducing these ephemeral details, the moment itself is slowed and the original context of time and place is altered and expanded. A passing glimpse into the neighbour’s window is immortalized, the reflection of light in a mirror is arrested in time. Diligently rendering them with layers of paint, these fleeting, almost diaristic snapshots become fixed as a kind of archive.
