Biography

Madison Taylor (TradScape) is a visual folk artist, digital artist, and musician from Florida. An autodidact in the modern sense of the word, Madison has developed most of his skills through watching youtube videos, studying other artists, and a hefty amount of real world application in practice. He is currently spending his days, developing his art skills, creating and releasing artwork and music in the form of NFTs, and leading a 7 member traditional jazz band that plays in local bars and restaurants in his city.

As TradScape, he is best known for his fantasy themed pixel animations and the music he writes and records for the pieces.  

Artist Statement 

Creating this piece got me thinking about what some people call “ The Folk Process” and whether that phrase or idea has taken on a new meaning in the modern world, especially in relation to digital art and the internet. I first learned about the popular French-Canadian folk tale  “La Chasse-galerie” from Samuel Arsenault-Brassard, one of the team members putting on this show. When I first googled the tale and saw the images of a boatful of men wildly rowing through the sky, I knew I wanted to animate it.  I didn’t have to do much research to understand why this tale was so popular. It’s inherently captivating. 

I’ve always considered myself a “folk artist” in every artistic venture I pursue. I think that comes from my obsession with interpreting what I see in the world around me, or re-interpreting old music and art. Folk art is intrinsically interpretive in my opinion. Often unaffected by preferred methods and institutional education, folk art can give us a special “raw” look into an artist’s personal interpretation.

The goal with  my version of “ La Chasse-galerie”, is that the viewer can see the folk process happening in an authentic way. The underlying aesthetic style, story, and music attached to this work are all traditionally “non digital”.  But my hope is that my digital interpretation feels organic, nostalgic, and every bit as charming.
