Biography 

Gio Mariani is a non-binary artist and designer, born in Dois Irmãos - BR, currently living in Rotterdam, NL. Since graduating in graphic design in 2014 have been working as a designer creating visual identities and products for clients and making illustrations for themselves. In 2020, started using pixel art to create compositions inspired by tapestries and embroidery pieces and, in May 2021, joined the NFT market through Hic Et Nunc. They currently sell their art in the Tezos and Ethereum blockchain. Gio use cyclical pixel animations to illustrate espiritual and magical worlds and beings to explore and process themes that are close to them, such as grief, gender and anxiety. 

Artist Statement

I make looping pixel art animations. I like to think I register new layers of reality in tiny canvases, not creating something out of thin air, but rather uncovering something hidden, bit by bit.

I’m fascinated by the cyclicality of the gif as a medium. Using a small number of frames and making the elements go their way three or more times in a loop, I make them exist simultaneously, being only one and also many.

I use the making of my pieces to process emotions and thoughts, as I see myself as the beings in there, whether as wishful thinking or criticism. I like to see myself as a genderless almost formless being just as they are. And the repetition of their acts is a reminder of the inactivity I see in myself sometimes, doing things that don’t serve me anymore but I keep doing it because it’s comfortable. And is also a reminder to me to respect my own cycles. 

“Uncontrol Panel” reflects the anxiety of creating the spectacle of a digital persona.
