"Becoming Shooting Stars" par Yannick De Serre

La galerie Jano Lapin est fier de présenter l’exposition solo «Becoming Shooting Stars » de l’Artiste Yannick De Serre qui ouvrira ses portes le jeudi 21 septembre 2023 dès 17h.   

Nous sommes tous habités par des fantômes qui soit nôtres ou rencontrés. 

La genèse de ce projet puise son inspiration de deux sources distinctes.  La première est l’œuvre de l’artiste Catherine Bolduc : Autohypnose (2019) Image trouvée rehaussée d’aquarelle et d’acrylique.  Sur cette impression au jet d’encre, on peut y voir une femme, anonyme, admirant son portrait dans un miroir psyché.  Bolduc a ici délibérément caché le visage de cette femme en élaborant des chemins complexes de couleurs entre le dit visage et le miroir que cette dernière tient à la main.  S’agit-il d’une autohypnose ou encore d’une tentative ultime de vouloir comprendre la source de certains tourments?  

Dans un deuxième temps, De Serre c’est également inspiré d’une histoire fictive provenant du milieu hospitalier :   Une tentative de suicide d’une femme-mère-conjointe ayant subis les abus, physiques et psychologiques, d’un homme-père-mari.  L’artiste, travaillant également en contexte de soins intensifs en milieu hospitalier, s’inspire de faits trop souvent rencontrés. 

Pour cette exposition, De Serre explore les confins de l’histoire, celle en amont et en aval de l’évènement tragique.  Ces œuvres, chargées de sens, se trouvent à la fois enrichis par l’aura antiques d’objets trouvés et par la stérilité émotive de certains objets médicaux.  Ici, par l’entremise de vanités contemporaines, l’artiste met en scène la décision de vouloir en finir de cette femme.  Puis, avec l’aide d’une couverture médicale aux allures de linceul, il nous ramène cette présence qui n’est plus.  


À propos de l’artiste


Artiste multidisciplinaire, Yannick De Serre est détenteur d’un baccalauréat en arts visuels de l’Université Laval.  Nous retrouvons ces œuvres dans de nombreuses collections privées et institutionnelles (dont le Musée d’Art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul et la BANQ).  En 2018, ses recherches artistiques furent d’ailleurs soutenues par une bourse de recherche et création  du CAC. La production récente de l’artiste met l’emphase sur sa pratique infirmier qu'il exerce depuis 2004 en milieu intensif.    Il questionne entre-autre la notion de « caring ». Empreint de sensibilité, l’intimité de son art vient trouver écho auprès de tous.

The Jano Lapin Gallery is proud to present the solo exhibition "Becoming Shooting Stars" by Artist Yannick De Serre, which will open its doors on Thursday, September 21, 2023, starting at 5:00 PM.

We are all inhabited by ghosts, whether they are our own or encountered.

The genesis of this project draws inspiration from two distinct sources. The first is the artwork of artist Catherine Bolduc: "Autohypnose" (2019), an image found enhanced with watercolour and acrylic. In this inkjet print, an anonymous woman can be seen admiring her reflection in a psyché mirror. Bolduc deliberately concealed the woman's face by creating intricate paths of colors between the said face and the mirror she holds. Is it self-hypnosis or an ultimate attempt to understand the source of certain torments?

Secondly, De Serre also drew inspiration from a fictional story from the hospital environment: a suicide attempt by a woman-mother-partner who had suffered physical and psychological abuse from a man-father-husband. The artist, also working in the context of intensive care in a hospital setting, draws inspiration from frequently encountered facts.

For this exhibition, De Serre explores the boundaries of the history, both upstream and downstream of the tragic event. These meaningful works are enriched by the antique aura of found objects and the emotional sterility of certain medical items. Here, through contemporary vanities, the artist stages the decision of the woman to end it. Then, with the help of a medical cover resembling a shroud, he brings back this presence that is no more.

About the Artist

As a multidisciplinary artist, Yannick De Serre holds a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from Laval University. His works can be found in numerous private and institutional collections (including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Baie-Saint-Paul and the BANQ). In 2018, his artistic research was supported by a research and creation grant from the CAC. The artist's recent production emphasizes his nursing practice, which he has been practicing intensively since 2004. He questions, among other things, the concept of "caring." With sensitivity, the intimacy of his art resonates with everyone.
